Identify the negative belief you want to work on and a more balanced alternative. Each day, actively look for experiences — however small — that support the new belief. Rate how much each piece of evidence shifts your conviction. Over time, the log builds a body of evidence your mind can't easily dismiss.
Use as part of core belief modification work, particularly when the client holds negative beliefs about themselves such as 'I am worthless' or 'I am incompetent.' The positive data log counters the negative filter that maintains depressive core beliefs by systematically attending to disconfirming evidence. Best used alongside continuum work and core belief worksheets.
Explain the rationale: 'When we hold a strong negative belief about ourselves, our mind tends to filter out anything that doesn't fit. This record is like training a spotlight on the evidence your mind usually ignores. It's not about being unrealistically positive; it's about seeing the full picture.'
For clients who dismiss positive evidence, use a column for 'how I would usually discount this' to make the filtering process explicit. Start by recording other people's positive qualities if the client cannot identify any of their own. For perfectionistic clients, include small everyday competencies, not just achievements.
Not effective as a standalone intervention without the broader context of core belief work. Avoid if the client experiences the task as invalidating or as being told to 'think positive.' Be cautious with clients who may use it as a reassurance-seeking tool rather than genuine evidence gathering.
Review the log weekly in session. The accumulation of entries over weeks is more powerful than any single entry. Ask the client to rate their belief conviction before and after reviewing the log. If the client consistently cannot generate entries, this may indicate the core belief identification needs revisiting.
